Dell Inspiron 15R - An everyday use contender [Review]

The new Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) is the company’s attempt to reinvigorate its value-for-money consumer laptop offering. The new 15-inch Inspiron 15R sports the latest Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3-2310M processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 525M graphics with Optimus automatic graphics switching feature. The notebook also introduces a couple of new features to Dell’s Inspiron line, but does it still offer great value for customers? We try and explore...

Dell Inspiron 15R: Look and Feel

The Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) isn’t drastically different looking in terms of design compared to the previous generation of Dell Inspiron 15R. The laptop has a similar protruding hinge on its back like the Dell Vostro V13 and Vostro V130 laptops. The previous Inspiron 14R and 15R laptops sported a glossy screen lid, but where the new Inspiron 15R differs is it allows you to change its screen lid with a variety of options Dell sells on its website. As a rule, Dell provides an extra glossy screen lid with every new Dell Inspiron 15R you purchase. We recommend buying a non-dark colour as dark colours with glossy surfaces attract a lot of fingerprint smudges. When it comes to switching the lids, the process is extremely easy and the lids fit and align onto the screen’s back panel elegantly.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 - A sleek business ultraportable [Review]The new Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) sports a shiny black surface on its screen bezel, while the palmrest and the strip above the keyboard have slightly muted gloss on them -- they still shine though. The keyboard deck has a shiny metal-like strip which adds a nice touch to the Dell Inspiron 15R’s otherwise monotonous look. The laptop’s build quality is fine, given the fact that the Inspiron is Dell’s value-for-money laptop segment -- the twin hinges on the spine secures the screen with the rest of the chassis pretty well. The Inspiron 15R weighs about 2.4-kg with a standard 6-cell battery, which is good for a 15-inch laptop, but don’t have high hopes of carrying this to college or on your travels every now and then as it’s frame is bulky.

Dell Inspiron 15R: Screen

The laptop comes with a 15.6-inch glossy WLED widescreen display with a 1366x768 pixel resolution. Just like any other glossy screen laptop out there, the Dell Inspiron 15R’s screen reflects objects behind you -- especially light sources -- when its screen is black. Bright visuals diffuses the reflection a bit but you still have to train yourself to ignore the distraction. But glossy screens is pretty much the industry norm now, not an isolated exception on the Dell Inspiron 15R
The laptop’s screen is quite bright and evenly lit. Colors are washed out though, they don’t seem optimally saturated. The Dell Inspiron 15R’s viewing angles are ordinary, with noticeable colour shift when you watch an image from three different positions in front of the screen. But watching movies and videos is a good experience due to the screen’s glossy layer -- gaming too, for that matter, at native resolution. Reading text is comfortable. The Inspiron 15R comes with a webcam with face-recognition support and it’s alright for video chatting.

Dell Inspiron 15R: Keyboard and Touchpad

Dell has completely replaced the Inspiron 15R’s keyboard. Gone are the previous closely-packed keys, instead you now find isolated, chiclet-styled keys on the laptop’s keyboard. The chiclet key’s touch on the Inspiron 15R is different from that on the Sony VAIO S, and it isn’t as great as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1's keyboard, but it’s good to use nonetheless. All the prominent and frequently-used keys are nice and big and work well, while the dedicated number pad on the right is a life-saver for someone who’s used to entering numbers in a spreadsheet -- nothing is out of place in the Dell Inspiron 15R’s keyboard layout, as well. Keyboard response and feedback is good overall and it has a good amount of shortcut buttons -- Wi-Fi toggle, turn of touchpad, multimedia buttons, etc.

The Dell Inspiron 15R’s touchpad is nice and wide -- it sits slightly shallower than the rest of the palmrest. It’s smooth surface feels good on touch and the touchpad is quite sensitive, requiring only soft impacts for manipulating things on screen. The touchpad’s multi-gesture enabled, allowing you to pinch to zoom, pan, scroll through pages and images. The Inspiron 15R’s two accompanying mouse buttons are alright and work well.

Leaked photos of Symbian Belle powered Nokia Zeta hit the Internet

Lately, the tech world has been abuzz with the rumors of new range of Nokia's Symbian Belle based phones. Adding fuel to the fire, new pictures of Nokia Zeta aka Nokia 700, one of those Symbian Belle based phones, have surfaced, found by KnowYourMobile India. Reports say the device sports a 1GHz processor, a 3.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 640x360, a front facing VGA camera and 5MP rear camera with LED flash.

Nokia Zeta is also being billed as “the thinnest smartphone ever,” though looking at the some of the offerings in the market right now, it will probably be the thinnest Nokia smartphone ever instead. The device is supposedly also very lightweight, at roughly 80gm.

The Finnish company recently unveiled Meego based N9 that also sported NFC connectivity. It is rumoured that many of the Symbian Belle powered handsets, especially the higher end ones, come with NFC connectivity features. The Zeta smartphone is allso said to be equipped with 3G support for HSPA speed connectivity options through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The device further offers a storage memory of 32 GB via micro SD card.

It is being speculated that Nokia Zeta will fall under the Nokia's budget smartphone segment. The new Symbian Belle phones apparently show Nokia is not done with Symbian OS even as it gears up for Windows Phone 7 devices. Of late, we have seen a spate of leaked photos of Nokia handsets. And the updated Symbian in Nokia Zeta has only intensified the anticipation.

Nokia Zeta seems to be Nokia's latest attempt to sustain its market share in the affordable smartphone section. With numerous brands joining the bandwagon of low cost smartphones, Nokia is compelled to come up with something really revolutionary in that affordable price range. Nokia Zeta specs are impressive and considering the anticipation it will certainly find some takers. However, it all depends on Nokia how it prices Zeta! If priced correctly, the smartphone is most likely to carve niche in the budget smartphone section.

Kingston to focus strongly on SSD in 2011

Kingston, a leading Flash memory brand, announced that it will be stepping up its focus on its SSDNow product line in India. SSDs have been one of the important businesses for Kingston since 2009 and it plans on aggressively pushing its SSDNow product line in 2011. Since its foray into the SSD market at the beginning of 2009, Kingston has been at the forefront in driving SSD adoption among enterprises and prosumers alike.

SSDs have been growing in popularity due to high reliability, low power consumption, anti-shock features, and most importantly, very high performance. SSD is all set to become the mainstream as prices continue to fall and capacities continue to increase. Seeing the robust potential growth that the SSD segment holds, Kingston is focusing on garnering higher volumes and improving market reach for its SSDNow line in India. Kingston offers a whole range of SSDs to improve the performance and reliability of computing systems. Flash technology makes SSDNow drives faster, more durable and reliable than standard mechanical hard disk drives. Kingston will be adding more new and outstanding-performance SSD products this year to its expanding SSDNow product portfolio. Kingston unveiled its first SSDNow line for the enterprise vertical in January 2009, such as SSDNow E Series. Currently Kingston’s SSDNow line includes a wide range of products catering to various needs of the different markets. Depending on consumer requirements, Kingston’s SSDNow range has a drive to meet every need. The SSDNow V Series drivesare suitable for all consumers. It is an entry level drive but still significantly outperforms standard HDDs with high C/P values. The performance level of this drive and capacities available are sufficient for the day-to-day needs of users working with standard office applications. The SSDNow V+ Series drives are ideal for corporation users with faster speed and more advanced specs. As SSD capacities are becoming higher and pricing are becoming more affordable, these drives are ideal as HDD replacements in systems.

Commenting on the emerging SSD segment in India, Nidhi Sethi, Flash Memory Sales Director, Kingston India, said:” Earlier people had reservations with Flash memory, but now it has become the mainstream and I believe the same can happen with SSD. In the beginning, there’s no demand of SSDs because the pricing was high and also people were not aware of the benefits that SSDs could bring. As more and more consumers know about the SSD technology and realize the benefits that it can bring for them, I have confidence in the growth of the business in India. Kingston has expanded our product line and gained a strong foothold in this segment since entering the SSD market, and we would like to dominate this market in the near future.”

Kingston Digital transforms iPad, iPhone and iPod touch storage capabilities

Hsinchu, Taiwan – June 2, 2011 --Kingston, the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the sleek and functional Wi-Drive, built to address the ever-increasing storage needs of Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users (www.kingston.com/flash/wi_drive.asp). Wi-Drive, a wireless, portable storage solution, allows users to expand the number of documents, images, music and video files they can access from Apple devices. The combination of this storage expansion, file sharing and a rugged portable form factor makes it a perfect companion device.

Wi-Drive, along with its app from the App Store, allows users to stream videos, access music or share files with other Apple device owners. The distinctively designed, pocket-sized Wi-Drive utilizes Flash-based technology to store data from USB-compatible PCs. These files are then easily retrieved via Wi-Drive’s built-in wireless signal without requiring cables or an Internet connection. Three users can work simultaneously with different file types from a single Wi-Drive without any performance disruption.

“Wi-Drive is an ideal solution for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users who feel confined by their current storage capacity,” said Nathan Su, Flash Memory Sales Director, APAC Region, Kingston. “Wi-Drive allows Apple device owners to wirelessly manage document and media files, and choose to share them with others, while on the go for work or pleasure. This unique functionality, combined with the durability of a Flash-based device, will satisfy both casual users and the most discerning technophiles.”

To begin using Wi-Drive with any of the compatible Apple products, users simply drag and drop files from their PC to Wi-Drive via USB cable, similar to a typical USB Flash drive data transfer. Users then download the Wi-Drive application from the App Store before connecting the Wi-Drive to their device. A video with a demonstration of the solution is also available here: www.kingston.com/flash/wi_drive.asp

Kingston offers Wi-Drive in both 16GB and 32GB sizes and the product will be available for purchase in late June 2011.

How to combine your Facebook and Google+ feeds

The Internet has a brand-new place to get social with Google+, but for many of the millions of people already on Facebook, the thought of keeping up with yet another network of friends may be too much to handle. If that sounds like you, you're in luck - a developer has come up with a way to see your Facebook news feed on Google+.
Crossrider, which markets itself as a cross-browser platform for other developers, released the extension, cleverly titled Google+Facebook, earlier today. After downloading and installing it, a small Facebook tab appears at the top of the page, right beside the Google+ Home button. Clicking on it will display your Facebook news feed instead of your Google+ Stream. Just click on Home to go back. The extension even lets you update your Facebook status from withing Google+.

Trying out the extension, we noticed that Google+Facebook imports only your "Most Recent" feed from Facebook—there's no option to get the more curated "Top News." It's also not an exact replica of that feed; in a side-by-side comparison, we noticed a few things ("like" notices, for example) that the extension missed. On top of that, it's a little buggy (your Google+ Stream still shows up when you click the Facebook tab, just way down on the page). We were grateful, however, for the unmissable blue Facebook flag at the top of the feed, a good reminder for which network you're looking at.

Crossrider says it took just one day for its developers to create the extension, which may explain some of the bugginess. It's available now for both Firefox and Chrome, and the download page says Crossrider is working on a version for Microsoft Internet Explorer, but that built-in security issues prevented them from supporting that browser upon the initial release.

What the hell is Crossrider, exactly? Describing itself as a free, easy-to-use framework for developers, it's a set of software tools intended to simplify the process of creating browser extensions. The idea is a developer creates an extension once, then Crossrider does the tedious work of making it compatible with multiple browsers. Previous applications of the tool include an enhanced Google "+Like" button and a tool that removes "annoying" image previews on Facebook.

You can download the Google+Facebook extension here.

Google adds new features to Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Maps

In the midst of all its redesigning, rebranding, and design unification, Google has gone ahead and made some feature changes to its other properties, such as Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Maps for Android. Check them out below:

Gmail

Over at Gmail, Google added the inbox style option, allowing users to quickly switch between style presets in a tab-like format, or a dropdown menu. There are five different style presets, to be used depending on personal taste, usage scenarios, etc. Google listed the five inbox style presets in a blog entitled “New! Pick your favourite inbox style,” and over the next several weeks, it is expected to unveil other inbox styles as well.

•Classic - This is the default inbox style most people are used to. In the Classic inbox, messages are ordered chronologically, with your most recent email at the top.
•Priority Inbox - Important and unread messages appear at the top of your inbox, then starred messages, then everything else. Each section can be customized further, so you can create your own inbox style.
•Important first - This style puts important mail at the top of the page (both read and unread messages). Everything else is in its own section at the bottom of your inbox. You may have noticed that we turned on importance arrows for everyone a few weeks ago; this inbox style separates messages with these arrows from those without.
•Unread first - Simple: unread mail at the top; everything else at the bottom.
•Starred first - Starred messages at the top; everything else at the bottom.
To use the feature, users will have to turn on the Inbox Style feature, and then, will have tabs of the styles on top until they settle on one for more than a week, at which point, the styles will be available via dropdown menu.

Google Docs

Google Docs has seen two new major changes, better document sharing on the go with the improved Google Docs for mobile, and new features for Google Docs videos. The new Google Docs for mobile allows tablets and mobile devices to easily sort and share one or more of their Google documents, either as a link, or as an attachment.

latest News --Google says China has renewed its operating licence

BEIJING: Google on Friday said Beijing has renewed the license it needs to continue operating a website in China, securing the search giant's foothold in the country's fast-growing Internet market despite tensions over censorship.

The renewal of the license to provide Internet content had been in doubt due to the rocky relations between Google and Chinese authorities over hacking of Gmail accounts and censorship of Google search results.

``We are very pleased that the government has renewed our ICP (Internet content provider) license and we look forward to continuing to provide web search and local products to our users in China,'' said an e-mailed statement by Google's top lawyer, David Drummond.

The statement, which gave no other details, also was posted on Google's blog. There was no immediate statement posted on the website of China's ministry of industry and information technology.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt said on Thursday he expected Beijing to renew the license.

Google closed its China search engine in March but has wanted to keep a website that offers music and other services. Users had been automatically redirected to Google's uncensored Hong Kong site, but the company stopped that last week after Chinese officials warned the move could mean losing its license.

Google's relations with Beijing have been rocky since the US search giant said it no longer wanted to cooperate with government Internet censorship. The announcement was prompted by cyber attacks the company traced to China.

The conflict has posed a balancing act for Google. The company wants to uphold the principle of free access to information while also keeping a foothold in a market that has nearly 400 million Web users, the world's biggest.

Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., does not hold the kind of dominant position in the Chinese search market that it does in the US. The search engine operated by Chinese competitor Baidu has about 60 percent of the market to Google's 30 percent.
