Today Microsoft launched its first Android application Tag Reader, The company has released an Android port of its Tag app, which allows users to access information stored in its special barcode format. The application enables phone owners to scan various barcodes with their devices, and it is already available for download from the Android Market. Microsoft’s Tag technology enables users to transform their mobile phones in barcode readers. All that one has to do is to point the camera on the phone at a tag, take a picture, and the application will interpret it.

Linux kernel 3.0 now available

As we reported earlier, Linux kernel developers were considering changing the version number and the versioning scheme for the Linux kernel. The first Linux kernel under the new 3.0 version, and versioning scheme has now been released,and work continues on to Linux 3.1

The Linux kernel has been in development 20 years now, more than half of which has been as Linux kernel 2.6 series.

Why exactly? What is so important about 2.6 you ask? Nothing. Version numbers are pretty much meaningless. Most proprietary software is version driven, v 5 has to have enough features over v 4 to justify an upgrade, however with open source software, when new version are delivered at a consistent rate, a huge dump of features has fewer benefits.

The Linux kernel 3.0 likewise is not a major release in any which way other than the fact that is finally breaks the 2.6 chain, which is a minor aspect as best, this same code could have come out as 2.6.40, if the version bump has not been decided.

If version numbers are meaningless, they should at least be consistent. With this release onwards, the version numbering scheme is simply to increment the minor version number for each release, and the patch number for each patch release, so after 3.0 will come 3.1 and so on unless there is a patch made available for some issue, or for a long term release, which would come as 3.0.1 etc.

Part of the reason for this new version bump is that this year is the 20th anniversary of the Linux kernel, making it as opportune a time as any to do something that brings only a superficial change.

While the kernel 3.0 sources are available at the Linux kernel website, it will take some time before it is available in distros. Ubuntu 11.10 and Fedora 16 coming in October should feature the 3.0 kernel.

Linus Torvalds about the Linux kernel 3.0 change:

"So what are the big changes?

NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. Sure, we have the usual two thirds driver changes, and a lot of random fixes, but the point is that 3.0 is *just* about renumbering, we are very much *not* doing a KDE-4 or a Gnome-3 here. No breakage, no special scary new features, nothing at all like that. We've been doing time-based releases for many years now, this is in no way about features. If you want an excuse for the renumbering, you really should look at the time-based one ("20 years") instead.

So no ABI changes, no API changes, no magical new features - just steady plodding progress. good. There's absolutely no reason to aim for the traditional ".0" problems that so many projects have."

How To: Install Windows 7 Or Windows 8 From USB Drive [Detailed 100% Working Guide]

This guide works 100% for Vista & Windows 7 unlike most of the guides out there. I have seen many sites/blogs that have “Install Vista from USB guide” but either with incomplete steps or not working guide. I have also seen some guides that don’t’ use proper commands in this guide. After spending many hours I have come up with this 100% working guide.

I just did this method on one of my friends machine and installed the new Windows 7 BETA. The main advantage is that by using USB drive you will be able to install Windows 7/Vista in just 15 minutes. You can also use this bootable USB drive on friend’s computer who doesn’t have a DVD optical drive.

The method is very simple and you can use without any hassles. Needless to say that your motherboard should support USB Boot feature to make use of the bootable USB drive.

Requirements:

*USB Flash Drive (Minimum 4GB)

*Windows 7 or Vista installation files.

Follow the below steps to create bootable Windows 7/Vista USB drive using which you can install Windows 7/Vista easily.

1. Plug-in your USB flash drive to USB port and move all the contents from USB drive to a safe location on your system.

2. Open Command Prompt with admin rights. Use any of the below methods to open Command Prompt with admin rights.

*Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.

Or

*Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

3. You need to know about the USB drive a little bit. Type in the following commands in the command prompt:

First type DISKPART and hit enter to see the below message.

Next type LIST DISK command and note down the Disk number (ex: Disk 1) of your USB flash drive. In the below screenshot my Flash Drive Disk no is Disk 1.

4. Next type all the below commands one by one. Here I assume that your disk drive no is “Disk 1”.If you have Disk 2 as your USB flash drive then use Disk 2.Refer the above step to confirm it.

So below are the commands you need to type and execute one by one:

SELECT DISK 1

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)

ASSIGN

EXIT

Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Next insert your Windows7/Vista DVD into the optical drive and check the drive letter of the DVD drive. In this guide I will assume that your DVD drive letter is “D” and USB drive letter is “H” (open my computer to know about it).

6. Maximize the minimized Command Prompt in the 4th step.Type the following command now:

D: CD BOOT and hit enter.Where “D” is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.

7. Type another command given below to update the USB drive with BOOTMGR compatible code.

BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H

Where “H” is your USB drive letter. Once you enter the above command you will see the below message.

8. Copy your Windows 7/Vista DVD contents to the USB flash drive.

9. Your USB drive is ready to boot and install Windows 7/Vista. Only thing you need to change the boot priority at the BIOS to USB from the HDD or CD ROM drive. I won’t explain it as it’s just the matter the changing the boot priority or enabling the USB boot option in the BIOS.

Note: If you are not able to boot after following this guide means you haven’t set the BIOS priority to USB. If you got any problem in following this guide feel free to ask questions by leaving comment.

Simple clock uses RTC chip and character display

[Giorgos Lazaridis] just finished building a simple clock on a breadboard. It uses a common real time clock chip, the DS1307. This is less expensive that its full-featured older brother, the DS3232. The difference between the two is that the 1307 requires an external 32.768 kHz crystal and it is not temperature compensated. This means it will not be quite as accurate over the long-haul (it may wander as much as one minute per month), but it still blows the accuracy of using a microcontroller as an RTC out of the water and includes a backup battery which will keep time when the rest of the circuit is switched off.

This design uses a PIC 16F1937 to display the time and date on a 16×2 character LCD screen. Six buttons are dedicated to incrementing one specific chunk of data (ie: one button changes the year, another the day, etc.). A seventh button can be held down when using the other six in order to decrement the setting. We’re always interested in how the button code is written. [Giorgos] did share his code, but he wrote it in assembly so it’s of little use to us as we tend to stick to C code.

Have you ever wanted to be someone else, at least over the phone? Do you dream of turning the tables on telemarketers, making them hurry to get off the line instead of you? If so, [Brad] over at LucidScience has the project for you.

A bit of a prankster at heart, he walks through the conversion of a normal telephone into a Data Access Arrangement device (DAA), allowing you to interface it with either hardware or software-based audio mixers.

The process can be completed in a relatively short time period, and doesn’t require much more than an old telephone, a handful of tools, and some miscellaneous switches and jacks. He disassembled a telephone and trimmed off all of the unnecessary circuitry while retaining most of the original functionality. Line in and out jacks were then installed in place of the handset microphone and speakers, respectively. The final result is a compact box that relays altered audio from any kind of mixing device to person at the other end of the call. Since the majority of the phone remains intact, your calls still sound natural as they pass through the phone’s existing voice filter and preamp circuitry.

Once the DAA is complete, you can use any number of effects on your voice, limited only by your audio mixer. [Brad] says he has long-time friends that don’t even recognize his voice after he has run it through his effects machine, so get started on yours before April Fool’s day arrives!

This is my favourite secret mobile phone tricks out of the list. When you have everything set up, you’ll be able to send a text message with a chosen keyword such as “˜shutdown’ to your PC. This then activates the shutdown procedure. Here’s how it works.

First, you create an easy text file with a one line command (this is specified in the video) and save it to your hard drive. Then, you set up a Kwiry account and sync it with your Email account which you have set up in Outlook Express.
A rule must then be created in Outlook Express which will detect any incoming emails with that keyword and then execute the shutdown command in the text file when it does.

By sending a text with the keyword to your Kwiry account, an identical email is sent to your own email account, thus you can shut down your PC via SMS when you’re out and about.

It’s best to choose an obscure word so a normal email doesn’t accidentally shut down your PC.

You could also use this for cueing up a video game or a program which takes a long time to load before you actually get home to your PC by choosing another application besides from the shutdown file when creating a rule.

And now Google has come up with its own URL shortcut called “g.co” that will only link to official Google products and services.

Google says on its blog that the 'g.co' link ensures it will only direct to web pages that are owned by Google and that only Google is authorised to create those g.co shortcuts. “That means you can visit a g.co shortcut confident you will always end up at a page for a Google product or service.”

The Indian Railways has announced new mobile services for its customers, making their lives easier. Specifically, the new services will allow customers to book train tickets over their phone, and, to provide a virtual copy of the ticket.

To book tickets via their phones, customers will have to register on the www.indianrailways.gov.in, where they will get a unique ID to use on railway bookings, and download a mobile ticketing application. Mobile booking will be open seven days a week, just like the web counterpart, and closed for the same hour, between 11:30pm to 12:30am. Users will receive a non-transferrable SMS confirmation of the ticket. A single session can book a single ticket for up to 6 passengers. More details when they become available.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched its Voice and Video over Internet Protocol (VVoIP) service in the country. BSNL has partnered with Sai Infosystem (SiS) to kick off the high speed Internet phone services. With the new services, BSNL subscribers will be able to make audio and video calls at will on any landline, mobile or Internet Protocol phone anywhere in the world, provided both the ends have video phone equipment.

Requirements:
1. A hacked phone.
2. ROMPatcher or ROMPatcher+ with your own C2Z patch
3. An application for working around with .mif files.(eg: S60 Unpack,MifTool2 etc; I prefer MifTool2)
4. File-Manager which shows all drives on your phone(Preferably X-Plore for its ease of use)
5. An image in Svg format which you want to set as your Autolock.mif( Its up to you whether you want transparent ones or not ).
You can take an image of any format & convert it SVG. Rename your SVG File to 0.svg

Steps:
1. Extract the contents of the Autolock.mif.
2. You will find a single file named 0.svg ( or 0.svgb )
3. Move your file in this folder & overwrite the 0.svg file (Alternatively, you can first delete the original 0.svg file & move your own file in the folder).
4. Pack the folder in a .mif file. (For those using MifTool2, Go to Options>Folder to mif>Scroll to the folder>Press Left Soft Key> Then select the second option.
5. Those of you using MifTool2, the unpacked & packed files are generated in D: drive (i.e. the RAM)
6. Apply open4all patch. Rename your file to Autolock.mif & move it to C://Resource://Apps. Apply C2Z patch & you are done!! ( You may need to restart your phone. Alternatively, you can use RAMBlow & then select Cleanup option & you are done;no need to reboot your phone.)
7. Congratulations!! You have created your own Autolock.mif
